Past Master

Also known as: PM

A Brother who has served his Lodge as Worshipful Master and has now returned to the sidelines or has taken another chair. Past Masters are unique Brethren in that they shall forever bear the title of Worshipful. They have no official authority beyond any other Brother of the Lodge but they are generally well-respected within the Lodge for having been it's leader. They are treasure chests of wisdom and are often called upon for insight when the Lodge or a Brother is faced with a difficult decision.

The Emblem of a Past Master in most U.S. Blue Lodges is the Compasses and Quadrant with the Blazing Star in the Center. This emblem was first used in the York Rite Royal Arch degrees and later adopted by the Blue Lodge. (see York Rite Degrees). The original emblem of a Past Master and the one still used in other parts of the world is the Forty-Seventh Problem of Euclid suspended beneath the Square.
