What Masonry Isn't
What Masonry Isn't
Submitted by Joshua Armstrong on Fri, 04/11/2008 - 21:41.From time to time, we, as Masons, lose sight of what Masonry is and isn't. We can all recite the canned phrases from our lectures like "Masonry is a regular system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols." But this is meaningless mumbling if we can't express to each other and to non-Masons what the Fraternity is and isn't.
I'll start with the basics. Basic though they be, the following points are often overlooked, even by Masons.
-
Masonry is not a religion.
-
Masonry can't make a good man from a scoundrel.
-
Masonry can't fix your life, find you a job, or help you meet women.
We've heard it hundreds of times that Masonry is or isn't a religion. Here's the bottom line: Masonry isn't in the business of teaching theology or saving souls because it isn't a religion. It's up to YOU to find salvation and the proper way to live from a religion. A church, mosque, synagogue, whichever. Masonry isn't saying that all religions put you on a path to the same God. That would be outside of our jurisdiction to say. We, as Masons, can't point you toward God. You must already know where He is and how to get to Him. We can only help you live a better life on earth that when your work here is done, you may reflect on a well-spent life and, assuming you followed whatever you deemed necessary to gain eternal life, you may hope for a glorious eternity.
Note that nowhere in our rituals or lessons does it guarantee that you've done what you ought to gain admission into eternity. Masonry can't make that guarantee since it isn't a religion.
Masonry's real secret is making good men better. We only admit (or ought only to admit) those men who have proven themselves to be of high moral character and good report within the community. If you're not already a man whom others would call "respectable," "upstanding," or "of high moral character," then Masonry cannot do anything for you and you oughn't be permitted to join until you have found a way to improve yourself. May we suggest a church? They have a reputation for taking those whom everyone else had abandoned and shaping them into moral and respectable people.
If you join Masonry looking for someone to fix your family situation, find you a source of income, or find you a wife, then you will regret joining. When we consider someone for membership, we ask them to signify that they are on good terms with their family or are earnestly seeking to restore their relationship with their family. A man's family is his most important earthly asset. When we consider someone for membership, they must signify that they have both the means and intent to support themselves and their families. We will aid and support those in need but laziness is not a Masonic attribute.
